Still a bit confused though. Is the W220 and W211 NTG firmware different?
The engineering mode doesn't seem to work though, so I can't check which version I have. I have an old map for my navigation (2007?), do I have to update the nav dvd-player individually, or should that be updated with newer maps? For the COMAND I found these: - W220 589 03 22 00 (2005 December) - W220 589 05 22 00 (2006 October, newest?) NAV Processor: - W220 589 04 22 00 (2006 March, newest?) Where do I download them? The only one I can find for NTG1 from Mercedes is ' Where do I find the other ones?
Can anyone confirm that W220 589 05 22 00 and W220 589 04 22 00 are the latest for COMAND + NAV? Is the latter one necessary if I buy a new (2015/16) NAV DVD? I called up my dealer, not knowing completely which CDs I need. They had never sold any CDs like this, but checked the price. He kept confusing the W220 589 04 22 00 (nav unit update) for a map update, and I told him that it is a firmware update, and tried to find out if it is necessary to do the update, or if it is included with newer map DVDs, but he didn't understand the question (W211 had nav unit updates included with the map DVDs). The price was like $5 USD, so in any case it really doesn't matter. But maybe someone here know if it is separate to the typical map DVD fw updates?
For W220 589 05 22 00 (COMAND, 2006 version) however, it costs $2000!!!! How is this possible? It's just a CD isn't it? W220 589 03 22 00 (older 2005 version) costs $15, so I guess I'll go with that, but I really wanted the newest update.
I've checked a few places, and it seems like the newest version has now increased with more than 1500% in price! Does anyone know why?
To prohibit people to buy it? I've found a guy in Canada who sells them for $20, but they are probably copies.
Are there any risks involved when upgrading? Does COMAND verify the CD before it updates? Can I end up with a bricked system.? I've tried going into the engineering menu (Hold Mute + Phone + Serv in 45seconds), but nothing happens.
How can I check which version I already have? If I put the update CD in, will it start the process, or say which version I already have first.?
Also, should the ignition be in Position 1 or 0? 0 you can turn COMAND on/off, but I'm afraid opening the door could do something funky. Position 1 seems safest, and maybe leave one door open? I guess charging the battery while updating would also be a good idea. You described the problem at (it would be helpful if you referred us to that link) - it involved your COMAND screen behaving oddly when you tried to insert a disc. Perhaps your solution at post 2 in that link is best, but Richard's approach at might help. As for problems simply ejecting the disc, some folks have had success by pressing and holding the 'Eject' button for much longer than would seem normal - sometimes for up to 5 minutes.
Others have had success repeatedly pressing the Eject button. The problem may be caused by a dirty roller - see One member of another forum suggested this: One can sometimes get the disc out by placing a thin blade (pallet knife) above the disc and press down lightly whilst pressing the Eject button. This forces the disc against the eject roller. Might be worth a try before starting to take things apart. After some thought I did disassemble it, and if not having fixed the player, at least it has fresh grease. It is a tiny metal wheel on one of the sides that push/pulls the CD/DVD, not a long rubber roller as in conventional CD players, nothing was dirty. The problem isn't this thing anyways, as it doesn't have the 'loading' sound when inserting the CD, it is physically blocking, so it is in a strange position, not knowing if there is a CD or not inserted. Anyways, it seems to be working fine now, but who knows in a day or two.
(Will update in my other thread ).
